Sustainable transportation engineering at PSE Consultants Limited begins from a simple position: transport infrastructure that is not climate-resilient is not sustainable, whatever its emissions profile. Our corridor work for the Federal Government of Nigeria — including drainage design and bridge assessment on the Aba-Owerri Road Corridor — already applies this thinking in practice: drainage designed for projected, not historical, rainfall intensity; pavement design balanced between whole-life cost and material efficiency; and alignments that avoid environmentally sensitive ground. Climate-smart transport is, in this sense, an extension of good highway engineering rather than a separate discipline.

The same logic extends to transport energy. As Nigeria's vehicle fleet gradually diversifies, EV charging infrastructure planning will move from pilot schemes to network questions: where charging demand concentrates, how grid capacity and land use interact, and how corridor design can accommodate charging provision. Our experience in district-level infrastructure for the Federal Capital Development Authority — roads, drainage and utility layouts considered together — is directly relevant to that integrated planning challenge. We build capability in this space from a foundation of evidenced highway, utility and drainage design, and we will name projects here as the register supports it.

Standards, Tools and Governance

Sustainable transportation work is governed by the same frameworks that discipline our other engineering. We execute commissions under FIDIC Red Book and Yellow Book conditions of contract, and — critically for this sector — we align environmental and social documentation with the World Bank Environmental and Social Framework (ESF), the instrument through which much climate-resilient transport investment in Nigeria is financed and assessed. Understanding ESF requirements is not optional for climate-smart transport work; it determines whether a corridor design is bankable.

PSE Consultants Limited is COREN-registered, and our quality management system operates on an ISO 9001 basis, with implementation commenced and certification not yet achieved — a distinction we make openly. Our design toolset supports the sustainability agenda directly: STAAD Pro for structural analysis of transport infrastructure and drainage structures, Tekla Structures for efficient material detailing (efficient detailing is sustainable detailing), AutoCAD for alignment and utility layout design, and GNSS survey equipment for establishing corridor and site control with the positional accuracy that minimises rework.

Governance in this sector also means honest measurement. Sustainability claims in transport infrastructure — emissions savings, resilience gains, material efficiencies — must be traceable to design assumptions and calculations, not asserted in proposals. Our documented revision control and staged design review practices exist to keep such claims auditable, which is precisely the discipline donors and the Federal Ministry of Works expect when financing climate-oriented transport programmes.

The natural client base for our sustainable transportation engineering capability is the Nigerian public sector and its development partners. The Federal Government of Nigeria and the Federal Ministry of Works commission the trunk corridors where climate-resilient design and EV-readiness will first be tested, and our existing federal corridor experience means we speak the design standards, procurement routes and ESF documentation requirements of those programmes fluently.

Development agencies and donor-funded programmes form a second group: where World Bank ESF alignment shapes tender requirements, consultancies that can integrate environmental and social assessment with corridor design hold a practical advantage. The Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) represents the urban and district-scale dimension, where utility layouts and road networks must be planned together — the same integration EV charging infrastructure will demand as adoption grows in the Federal Capital Territory and beyond.

State governments, whose road networks carry the majority of passenger movement, need affordable climate-smart transport design: drainage that copes with intensifying rainfall, pavements selected for whole-life cost, and corridor designs that do not lock in avoidable emissions. In the private sector, developers and fleet operators are the likely first movers on charging provision, and through PSE Consultants UK we also serve clients operating under British climate and transport policy regimes.
