Suleja Dam and Water Supply Project   Niger State, Nigeria

Suleja Dam and Water Supply Project: A Landmark Development

In 1991, the Niger State Government of Nigeria embarked on a transformative journey with the Suleja Dam and Water Supply project, aimed at ensuring sustainable water resources for the Suleja area. With a total project cost of $64 million USD, funded by the African Development Bank, this initiative marked a significant milestone in regional development.

Design and Construction

PSE Consultants Limited led the design and construction supervision of the project, while Impresit Bakolori handled the construction. The dam is a 20-meter-high homogenous earth structure, stretching 1,200 meters in length. The reservoir it creates covers an area of 5 square kilometers and holds approximately 30 million cubic meters of water, guaranteeing a reliable supply for Suleja and its surroundings.

Key Features

The Curved Spillway: This 105-meter curved spillway is designed for increased discharge capacity, space efficiency, and energy dissipation, effectively reducing the risk of flooding.

Intake Tower and Tunnel: The intake tower, connected to the other side of the dam via a 125-meter tunnel, controls the outflow of water from the reservoir. It houses adjustable valves at various levels to regulate the water released downstream, ensuring efficient flow for both domestic and agricultural needs.

Impact

The Suleja Dam project significantly enhanced water availability in the region, supporting local agriculture and improving living conditions. It stands as a testament to the expertise of PSE Consultants in delivering large-scale, sustainable infrastructure projects.
